Serenity/Wellbeing - Depression Complex

serenity

5-Hydroxytryptophan or 5-HTP is a naturally-occurring amino acid, a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin and an intermediate in tryptophan metabolism. It is marketed in the United States and other countries as a dietary supplement for use as an antidepressant, appetite suppressant, and sleep aid. 5-HTP has been shown to be as effective as imipramine for the treatment of depression. Current research shows promise in using 5-HTP for treating children with night terrors. After six months of use 83.9% of the children treated with 5-HTP were free from their persistent sleep terrors.

Some persons with fibromyalgia find that 5-HTP improves their symptoms. Fibromyalgia sufferers report improvement in sleep, depression, pain and all major complaints related to fibromyalgia. Studies are continuing to refine dosage and continued use.

It is also used as a prophylactic against chronic daily headache.[13] 5-HTP may also be useful in treatment for migraines, since studies have shown that migraines occur when serotonin levels are low.

L-Tyrosine is a starting material for neurotransmitters and increases plasma neurotransmitter levels (particularly dopamine and norepinephrine)[8] but has little if any effect on mood. The effect on mood is more noticeable in humans subjected to stressful conditions.

DEPRESSION COMPLEX

depression-complexA number of studies have found tyrosine to be useful during conditions of stress, cold, fatigue, prolonged work and sleep deprivation, with reductions in stress hormone levels, reductions in stress-induced weight loss seen in animal trials,[12] improvements in cognitive and physical performance[10][16][17] seen in human trials. Because tyrosine hydroxylase is the rate limiting enzyme, however, effects are less significant than those of l-dopa.

San Johns Wort St. John's Wort is one of the most studied natural antidepressants in the United States. St. John's Wort acts like many prescription depression medications, but is natural and more gentle to the body. St. John's Wort tablets. If you or a loved one are looking for St. John's Wort.

Though the net effect of taking St. John's wort and 5-HTP may be the same, if taken together SJW and 5-HTP are even more effective. St. John's wort is a SSRI, a Serotonin reuptake inhibitor, (Actually SJW inhibits the reuptake of all three feel-good neurotransmitters: serotonin, nor-epinephrine, and dopamine) but 5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin.

What this means is that your body breaks 5-HTP down (in the neurons) into serotonin, the very chemical that St. John's wort manipulates to help you feel happier, calmer . . . The metaphor being; if you were an automobile you would be filling up your gas tank with 5-HTP, at which time the St. John's wort takes over, acting like a carburetor; instructing the serotonin where to (or in this case where not to) go. So, in essence, taking SJW and 5-HTP creates a synergy (1+1=3).

Most studies were conducted using a dose of 50-100 mg. three times per day. Obesity patients 20 minutes before meals. The onset of action is fairly rapid, (3 to 5 days).
